Environmental management

CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY

Limit energy consumption.
Steel production is a process that requires a lot of energy, especially electricity and gas. Aware of this consumption, our goal is to minimize the waste of natural resources as a whole. Therefore, we have trained employees as “energy correspondents”. Their role is to monitor this consumption and to refer it to our Energy France manager. The purpose of these new missions is raise awareness among our employees about the use of energy. Besides our aim is to look for new efficient technologies and thus reduce our consumption

Our society is investing not only to save the planet and fossil fuels, but also to make its steel processes more efficient. A high consumption does not necessarily mean better productivity, and we know this well.
We therefore optimize our consumption today with an accurate calculation of the parameters that are useful for both optimal production and energy consumption management.

Through various projects and studies, we make every effort to improve our own environmental performance and reduce our carbon footprint.

Reduce water consumption.
The production of steel requires the use of water mainly for cooling products and installations subject to high heat.
Water is part of the steel making process. At present, any alternative is efficient enough to replace it.

Committed to preserve the quality of water and to control its consumption, our sites are equipped with water treatment systems. Therefore, we work in a closed circuit and limit our consumption while monitoring its quality very precisely

The water quality is systematically checked upstream and downstream of our systems, to ensure compliance with regulatory thresholds and to ensure that the water discharged will not be a problem for the environment.
Whether it is our industrial consumption or our natural discharges (such as rainwater crossing our site and flowing in the pipes provided for this purpose), accredited bodies in this field check us regularly.

Air preservation.
Our industrial activity implies that we control our atmospheric discharges mainly due to the melting of scrap metal.
Our sites are equipped with “dust removal” systems, which capture ferrous dust. They vacuum the ferrous dust at the source, directly on the installations and treat them by a specific system specially designed for our activity.
Accredited bodies carry out many controls, and we are subject to strict regulations in this area. This monitoring is also one of the control points carried out throughout our manufacturing process, directly indexed on the manufacturing facilities.
We also pay great attention on our water vapors. These vapors result from a normal physical reaction from the use of cooling water from our facilities.
Enhancement of co-products.
We pay particular attention to the promotion of our co-products. In fact, during the production of steel, we generate a material called "slag". These co-products, previously considered as waste, are today the subject of numerous studies to become a substitute for natural materials used for road embankments, under layers of road and parking foundations, bituminous coated…
Our slag is the subject of numerous analyzes. Internally, we use them to replace certain alloys for the manufacture of our steels.
Sorting of waste.
Industries, as a whole, generate, like many households, indirect waste due to their activities (household waste, plastics, cardboard, paints, containers, packaging, etc.).
All the sites of Riva Group reuse more than 90% of their waste, if only by carrying out strict and efficient selective sorting. Internally, we control the dumpsters of waste so that they follow the most optimal cycle for their evacuation and their final treatment.

Our commitment to the circular economy and the handling of ferrous waste.
In the aim of a circular economy and in compliance with the regulations, we ask our customers to inform the end users as well as the companies in charge of the demolition of structures and buildings on the importance of sorting waste and more precisely that of the reinforcements in the concrete. This common control contributes to the preservation of the environment as well as to the reduction of carbon footprints linked to the extraction of raw materials, which can be avoided by recycling and reuse actions.
Our production sites have got the updated certifications ISO 9001, 14001, and OHSAS 18001
Training and awareness.
The Company mobilizes all its employees on a daily basis to preserve the environment. The Group also gives internally several communications to raise awareness and train our employees in sorting waste, reducing energy consumption (electricity, water, eco-driving, etc.), taking environmental issues into account in their daily lives (using modes soft transport, carpooling, mobility plan, etc.).
Preserving the environment also involves everyday actions that we integrate into our industrial activity.
